Sonda (rocket)

Sonda is a series of Brazilian sounding rockets with solid rocket propulsion.

Rocketry

The Sonda 1 is a two-stage missile with a maximum altitude of 65 km, a takeoff thrust of 27 kN, a launch mass of 100 kg, a diameter of 11 centimeters. It was launched 1965-1966 nine times and had a payload of about 5 kg.

The Sonda 2 is a single-stage rocket with a maximum flight altitude of 180 km, a takeoff thrust of 36 kN, a launch mass of 400 kg, a diameter of 30 cm and a length of 5.6 m. It was started seven times between 1990 and 1996 and had a payload of less than 70 kg.

The Sonda 3 is available in three versions ( Sonda 3, Sonda 3M1 and 3M2 Sonda ) available two-stage missile with a maximum altitude 250-650 km, a takeoff thrust of 102 kN, a diameter of 0.30 m and a length of 8.00 m. In her Sonda 2 came as a senior on a new first stage are used. The rockets came in 1976 for use and had a payload of between 50 and 150 kg. The take-off mass of 1500 kg in the first version and the second version of 1400 kg.

The Sonda 4 is a two-stage missile with a maximum altitude between 700 and 1000 km, a takeoff thrust of 203 kN, a launch mass of 7200 kg and a diameter of 1.01 m and a length of 11.00 m. Again, a modified Sonda 3 was used as the upper stage of a new first stage. It was started seven times 1984-1990 and had a payload of between 300 and 500 kg. 4 is based on the Sonda the launcher VLS 1 using 4 pieces as a booster and a modified as a first stage.

.

There are also versions with the VS -30, VS 30/Orion, VSB -30 and SV -40 based on the Sonda 3 or 4 other one - or two-stage variants for suborbital flights.

Data of the SV -40

  • Overall Length: 6,725 m
  • Diameter of the step: 1 m
  • Levels: 1
  • Total mass: 6235 kg
  • Mass of the payload: 500 kg
  • Achievable height at apogee :: 650 km

Use in Germany

The VS -30 was from the German Aerospace Center (DLR ) as a first stage for their experimental missile Shefex I, the VS -40 selected for its successor SHEFEX II within the development and flight experiment program SHEFEX.

Military use

There are civilian Sonda 1 to 4 missiles in the Brazilian Army and military counterparts in the form of battlefield weapons SS -07, SS -40 and SS -60 ( Army names of the last two types are FTG X-20 and FTG X -40), SS300 or SS1000.
