Songdhammakalyani Monastery

Wat Songdhammakalyani ( Thai: วัด ทรงธรรม กัลยาณี, RTGS transcription Wat Songtham Kanlayani, pronunciation [ Wat ˑ SON ˑ t ʰ at ˑ kan ˑ lá ˑ yes ː ˑ ni ː ] ) is a Buddhist temple ( wat ) in Nakhon Pathom province in Thailand's central region.

It is Thailand's first and only Bhikkhuni Temple.

Location

The temple is located on the eastern outskirts of Nakhon Pathom at the Thanon Nakhon Pathom Phetkasem from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom in Mueang. Phra Pathom Chedi is located about four kilometers west of the temple grounds.

History

The area in front of the town Nakhon Pathom was acquired in the 1960s by journalist, teacher and women's rights activist Woramai Kabinsing, 1971 could be ordained in Taiwan Bhikkhuni Ta Tao Fa Tzu. Then she left on the premises a ubosot as defined in the Vinayapitaka, and a Dhamma School ( " School Dhammapisamai " ) build. Since Thailand's Sangha has not yet recognize the ordination of bhikkhunis, the temple of the official status of a Wat was denied. Therefore, it is still officially a so-called People's Temple ( Thai: วัดราษฎร์ RTGS: Wat Rat ).
