Sosthenes of Macedon

Sosthenes ( Greek: Σωσθένης; † 277 BC) 279-277 BC, a regent of Macedon.

During the onslaught of the Celts in northern Greece and Thrace Sosthenes was a Macedonian army under several leaders, who sought to defend the country. He went ahead so active, that he was proclaimed the new king from the army after the deposition of Antipater II Etesias. He refused this dignity but off because he was not of royal blood and insisted to lead the Macedonians as their Strategos. He proposed a Celtic troops back under the chief Bolgios, shortly after he suffered against the chieftain Brennus defeat that forced him to retreat to the cities. Brennus could pull it freely plundering through Macedonia to Delphi and was only beaten at the Thermopylae of the united Greeks.

278 BC fought Sosthenes off an attack of Antigonus II Gonatas. He was probably 277 BC, died, after a brief interlude on him in a Ptolemy and Alexander in the regency followed. But in the same year Antigonus II Gonatas was recognized by the Macedonians as king.
