Soubey

Soubey is a municipality in the district Franches- Montagnes in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

Geography

Soubey is located on 476 m above sea level. M., 7 km north-east of the district municipal seat Saignelégier ( straight line ) and 10 km southwest of Saint- Ursanne. The farming village extends into the Talniederung the Doubs on both sides of the river, which is deep into the Jura chain.

The area of ​​13.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Clos du Doubs region. The deep Doubstals has up to 500 m high valley walls, which are composed mainly of meadows partly with forest and in some places crossed by rock bands. The Doubs itself is usually accompanied by a 200 to 300 m wide, flat flood plain. To Soubey include the hamlet Lobchez ( 483 m above sea level. M. ) on the right ( southern ) bank of the Doubs west of the village, Chercenay ( 575 m above sea level. M. ) and Froidevaux ( 678 m above sea level. M. ), both on grounds terraces on northern slope of the valley of the Doubs, Clairbief (482 m above sea level. M. ) directly to the French border, 4.5 km upstream from Soubey, as well as numerous individual farms. Neighboring communities of Soubey are Saignelégier, Les Enfers, Montfaucon and Clos du Doubs in Jura and Burnevillers and Indevillers in neighboring France.

Population

With 145 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Soubey is one of the small communities of the Canton of Jura. Of the 83.8 % inhabitants are French-speaking and German-speaking 16.2% (as of 2000). The population of Soubey amounted in 1880 to 417 residents in 1900 to 352 inhabitants. Due to high levels of emigration, a further decline of about 60 % was recorded in the 20th century.

Economy

Soubey is still strong dominantly agricultural village with dairy farming, animal husbandry, farming and fruit growing something in the climatically sunny slopes on the left of the Doubs. Outside the primary sector there are in the village only a few jobs in the local small businesses. Many workers are therefore commuters. Thanks to its beautiful location on the river Doubs benefited Soubey from tourism; the river valley is ideal for canoeing, fishing and long walks.

The community is located off the major road links, close to the main road B 18 (7,8 km ), which is accessible via Montfaucon; Another road leads from Saint- Ursanne to Soubey. With regular trains running Postbus you get to Saint -Ursanne. Twice a day, a bus route to Montfaucon and Saignelégier. The nearest railway station is 1.2 km south of Montfaucon on the railway line from Glovelier to La Chaux -de-Fonds.

History

His first mentioned in 1340 as the village Subeis, which belonged to the parish Chercenay. A chapel was first mentioned in 1139 in the hamlet Chercenay. The hamlet Froidevaux and Lobchez appear earlier in the documents as Soubey. The town was under the provost of Saint- Ursanne. Between 1793 and 1815 Soubey belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Valbert who owns a limestone-tiled roof, was built in 1632. It is equipped with modern windows (1962 ) by the artist Coghuf. In the center of Soubey are still old houses from the 17th to the 19th century preserved. Just east of the village stands on the river Bief a mill, whose origins go back to the year 1565. It was not until the second half of the 20th century in operation and has an impeller diameter of 6 m.
