Distribution and subspecies

There are a total of 14 subspecies. The four major subtypes:

  • Telestes souffia agassizi, the actual Strömer, which occurs mainly in Baden-Württemberg Rhine or in the Bavarian Danube catchment area and in the Alps to an altitude of 850 meters.
  • Telestes souffia muticellus (it. Strigione ), living in Northern and Central Italy, in France and in Switzerland ( Ticino).
  • Telestes souffia souffia (French Soufie or Seufe ), lives in the area of the Rhone and the Vars.
  • Telestes souffia montenegrinus ( serb. Mekiš or Moračke Jelšovke ), lives in the southern Dinarides

Way of life

The Strömer is a schooling fish, who is in free water at greater depths. The carp -like small fish feeds mainly on small invertebrates. The Strömer spawns in the months of March to May. The female lays its 6,000 to 8,000 eggs on fine-grained gravel.

Endangering

Previously, the Strömer occurred in the rivers of Baden-Württemberg Rhein-Neckar region and in the Bavarian Danube tributaries in large quantities. Mainly because of the water control structures ( weirs and barrages ) the habitat of the Strömers has changed dramatically for the part, so that today his stock must be regarded as high-risk.

The standing on the red list of endangered species fish was from the German Association of Sport Fishing ( VDSF ) elected Fish of the Year 1998. For the Strömer special protection areas must be shown, as it is listed in the Annex II of the Habitats Directive.
