South Banat District

South Banat ( Serbian: Јужно - Банатски округ, Yuzhno - Banatski okrug, ungar Dél- Bansagi körzet, Slovak:. Juhobanátsky okres rum. Districtul Banatul de Sud) is a Serbian administrative district in the northern part of Serbia and Vojvodina in the southeast.

It consists of the following municipalities:

  • Plandište
  • Opovo
  • Kovačica
  • Alibunar
  • Vršac
  • Bela Crkva
  • Pančevo
  • Kovin

This district has 2002 313.937 inhabitants according to the census. Main office is located in the city of Pančevo.

The ethnic distribution in the district:

  • Serbs: 220 641 ( 70.2 %)
  • Romanians: 21,618 (6.9%)
  • Hungary: 15,444 (4.9%)
  • Slovaks: 15,212 (4.8%)

The city Kovačica has a relative Slovak majority of 41 %.

Pančevo is known for the large number of cultural institutions, such as the National Library Veljko Vlahovic, historical archives and the Institute for protection of cultural and very old monuments.

Among the most beautiful monuments in the district include the Monastery Vojvolica from the year 1405, the Church of the Assumption, the Church of the Transfiguration (built in 1811 ) and the National Museum in the year 1833.

The main economic factors of the district form the oil refinery and the chemical industry in Pancevo and a fertilizer factory.
