South Funen Archipelago

The Danish South Sea ( Danish sailor Language: dansk Sydhav " Danish South Sea ") is a German name for the Danish part of the Baltic Sea (mostly the sailing area ) south of the Little and Great Belt around the small and larger Danish islands located there. In Danish, better known the term det Sydfynske Ohav ( German: the South Funen Archipelago ) south as a description of the archipelago 's main island of Funen.

Conceptual history

The term Danish Southern Seas is usually used only for water areas. The land mass of this region is, however, referred to rather than Danish islands. The name is probably meant purely geographically. Perhaps the term is also metaphorical origin and comes from the imagination of sailors, sailing in this region is comparable to the "exotic" waters of the South Seas. Another possibility of the origin is seen in the fact that the early Danish sailors compared the navigational difficult area with its numerous shoals and islands with the dangerous area of the South Pacific. In any case, dansk Sydhav is now a household name and is used under normal German sailors.

In the Danish South Sea are located next to the big island of Funen and Als, Langeland, Ærø, Lolland, Falster, Møn and many other smaller islands.
