Southend-on-Sea

Southend -on-Sea is a town in the county of Essex in the UK with 174 838 inhabitants ( 2012). The resort is located on the north bank of the Thames Estuary in the North Sea and is an industrial center with electrical and pharmaceutical industries and cultural center of the region with its theaters, cinemas, museums and galleries. Since 1998 the Borough of Southend -on-Sea is an independent administrative unit ( Unitary Authority).

The city comprises the following districts: Chalkwell, Eastwood, Leigh-on -Sea, Prittlewell, Shoeburyness, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay, and Westcliff- on-Sea.

History

The town was founded in 500-850 AD by pagan Saxons as Prittlewell. Since 1481 the name Southend ( Sowthende ) will be used.

In 1768, Southend -on-Sea was first mentioned as a seaside resort. 1793 erected the Royal Hotel and the terrace. In the 19th century the town developed into a fashionable seaside resort. The pier opened in 1889 and upgraded several times has a length of 2.16 kilometers, thus stands as the longest amusement piers in the world.

Multiple the pier was damaged by fire, in the years 1959, 1976 and 1992. During last date fire on October 9, 2005 a number of buildings of the pier were destroyed, for example, a railway station and a pub.

1856 was the site connection to the railway network in the country. On August 15, 1892 Southend -on-Sea got its town charter.

Attractions

In 1110 the Cluniac priory was built. Worth seeing is the museum set up in the restored priory. Also interesting are the Central Museum, the Planetarium, the South Church Hall and the Beecroft Art Gallery. Also worth seeing are the parks and Southend Pier, the longest pier in the world with a length of 2,158 m.

Traffic

The railway Great Eastern Railway (or one) connects the town of Southend Victoria Station via Billericay with the London Liverpool Street station. The line c2c (London, Tilbury and Southend Railway) connects the stations Southend Central and Southend East Tilbury on the London Fenchurch Street railway station.

The bus wrap from the company Arriva and FirstGroup, who acknowledge their tickets each other. National Express operates a daily bus service which to Liverpool and the bus X30 FirstGroup binds Southend -on-Sea at the Airport London Stansted. The roads A13 and A127 connect the four-lane Southend -on-Sea with London.

London Southend Airport emerged from the military airfield Rochford and today offers maintenance and repair services of aircraft, pilot training, corporate and recreational flights and on Saturdays during the summer scheduled flights to Jersey. There are plans to expand the airport, including the inclusion of a train station in 2009. In December 2008, the Southend Airport was bought by the Stobart Group for 21 million pounds. In addition to the airport several new shops were built. In April 2012, the budget airline easyJet will open a base here.
