Spahbed

Spāhbod or Spahbed (Persian سپهبد, in Modern Persian: Sepāhbad ) was a rank in the Parthian and Sassanid Empire. The title was used after the Islamization of Iran under the Iranian as well as the Persian -influenced dynasties. So there was among the Armenians and the Georgians the Sparapet the Spaspet as rank.

The word comes from Spah سپه for army and Bod بد for masters from. Another explanation is the derivative of Aspah'Paeity (in Modern Persian Asb and Payeh ), the commander of the cavalry or knights means.

Spāhbod alone indicates a higher military officer, but with the addition Eran ( dt: Iran) was Eran Spāhbod ايران سپهبد for the Empire commander or the generalissimo of the empire. Thus, it was the highest military rank after the Great King ( Shah -e Schahan ). The Eran Spāhbod acted as commander in chief, as well as Defense Minister and negotiator in peace negotiations. Low Spāhbods could command a field army, while the local Marzban could have the role of Field Marshal.

During the Pahlavidynastie in the 20th yrs. used the army again reinforced ancient Sassanid military ranks, including the Spāhbods. The rank of Spāhbods in pahlavischen army corresponded to the rank of lieutenant general, a rank which, under General ( pers: Arteshbod ) stood.
