Spanish Chess Championship

The Spanish Chess Championship (Spanish Campeonato de España de Ajedrez ) is an annual event, organized by the Spanish Chess Federation ( FEDA ).

History

The first chess championship of Spain at the Majorennität of King Alfonso XIII. took place from 24 April to 20 May 1902 in Madrid. The round-robin tournament in the military casino Centro del Ejército y de la Armada won first lieutenant of cavalry Manuel Golmayo, followed by Juan Sandon, Agustín Gómez and José Molina. The winner has won both the Medal of the Spanish master an award from the Queen Maria Christina. Golmayo repeated his success in 1912 against Manuel Zaragoza and 1921 in a tournament. Since 1942, the Spanish championship is held annually. The game mode changed several times over the years. Between 1932 and 1943, a challenger was determined in national tournaments, which then played a match against the title holders. From 1944 was fought in round-robin tournaments before 1971 for the first time the Swiss system was used. Another innovation there was in 2001: the participants started in two groups of 6 players with subsequent play-off. 2007 and 2008 the knockout system has been applied since 2009, again the Swiss system. The title has been won eight times so far by Miguel Illescas, Antonio Medina, Arturo Pomar were seven times successfully.
