Speed skating at the 1994 Winter Olympics
The otherwise successful German team had to cope with a certain disappointment. For the first time the effects of the changed social conditions for the mostly East German athletes were noticeable. The honor of the German team was finally rescued by the women, who all won six medals. A serious setback meant the overthrow of Gunda Niemann over 3000 meters. The ambitious from Erfurt, which was from the beginning as the winner over both long distance and fixed coin bank over 1500 meters was started to research on the fast ice of Hamar and snagged at the opening, on their parade route, on a frozen fast track mark. Despite the serious fall she scrambled to her feet and ran to the finish. So they made sure of a starting place and won after all, still silver and bronze.
Perhaps she had seen the opening race of the outstanding runner Johann Olav Koss and wanted to emulate him. The Norwegians triumphed on home soil ultimately on three routes, each with a world record and rose to the People's Heroes.
