Sphinx formosana

Sphinx formosana is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The type does the closely related species Sphinx crassistriga similar but has much narrower wings. The apex of the forewing falcate curved, with the hind wings it is pointed. The forewings are covered on the top with pale gray scales. In the male genitalia the Valven are stronger, the paramere with toothed on the dorsal half of the outer edge and a more early ventral edge. The sac is longer than in Sphinx crassistriga.

Occurrence and life

Sphinx formosana is endemic in the north of the central mountains of Taiwan. It is found in the counties of Nantou, Taichung and Ilan. The type occurs above 2000 meters above sea level. It belongs to the Eastern Palaearctic relict fauna of Taiwan's mountainous regions.

The moths were detected in June ( Nantou and Taichung) and July ( Ilan ). All preimaginal stages, any parasitoids and the other life are unknown.
