Srečko Katanec (2007)

Srečko Katanec (* July 16 1963 in Ljubljana ) is a retired Yugoslav and Slovenian football player.

Career as a player

Katanec began his career at the age of seven years at NK Ljubljana. The jump in the first Yugoslav league he managed in 1981 with the move to NK Olimpija Ljubljana.

In 1984 he played with Yugoslavia at the European Championships in 1984 his first major tournament, and then reached with the Yugoslav team to third place at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

1987 Katanec was with Partizan Belgrade for the first time Yugoslavian Champion. A year later, VfB Stuttgart took him under contract. Career as a coach

Since 1996 Katanec worked as an assistant coach of the Slovenian U-21 national team. After gaining coaching license in 1998, he was Slovenian coach. Previously, he had only had a short stint as head coach at the Slovenian first division HIT Gorica.

Nevertheless Katanec made ​​from the team that had lost in qualifying for the World Cup in 1998, seven out of eight games, a renowned force in European football. He led the team to Euro 2000.
