Sri Indraditya

Sri Indraditya (Si also Inthratit and other modifications; Thai: พ่อขุน ศรี อินทรา ทิต ย์ ) is considered the founder of the Phra Ruang - dynasty of the Kingdom of Sukhothai. He ruled between 1238 and about 1270.

He was first governor of the city-state ( Mueang ) Mueang Bang Yang, located in the extreme west of the then Kingdom of the Khmer in today's north-central region of Thailand, and was called Khun Bang Thao sound (short Hao ). Together with the governor of Mueang Council ( possibly today Lom Sak ), Pho Khun Pha Mueang, he shook off the rule of the Khmer territory of the managed by them, by simply paid no taxes and declared themselves independent. This was possible because the Khmer had his time engrossed in great architectural activities that affect their defense readiness and ability -sensitive.

Khun Bang Thao sound was declared king of the new kingdom and called Sri Indraditya. The people were impressed by his skill and courage, so he was given the epithet Phra Ruang ( Glorious Prince ). This name was given all the kings of Sukhothai, so that this first dynasty of Thai Phra Ruang is also called Dynasty.

King Sri Indraditya and his queen, Nang Suang, had three sons. The oldest died at a young age, the second Ban Mueang was called, and the third son defeated a Khmer prince in a battle on elephants, so that he was called by his father thanks Ramkhamhaeng.

It was probably King Sri Indraditya who has today's Wat Mahathat was founded. Its present form was probably the temple by Thai Loe about 1345, probably at first there were only five towers on a square platform ( one at each corner and one in the middle ). This discovered the Thai Fine Arts Department at the beginning of the 1960s, when they carried out repairs there.

Sri Indraditya died about 1270. Was succeeded by his second son, Ban Mueang.
