Şırnak is a Turkish city in Southeastern Anatolia and has 61 335 inhabitants ( 2011 census ), of which the majority of Kurds. She is since 1990 the capital of the province of Sirnak, near to the border triangle of Turkey / Syria / Iraq in a mountainous region. South of the Mount Cudi in Sirnak and west of the mountain is Gabar. Şırnak is located at 1,350 m above sea level and has no historic structure.

The name of Şırnak is derived according to a widespread popular etymology of very -i Nuh, which translated means city of Noah. This then was Şerneh and Şırnak. The Mount Cudi valid according to the Quran as Anlegeort Noah's ark. The derivation of the Armenian word Sirunak ( "beautiful" ) is controversial.
