St Conan’s Kirk

The St Conan 's Church, and St Conan 's Kirk, is a Presbyterian church building in the small Scottish settlement Lochawe. The building is located on the shores of Loch Awe, the. Away from the A85, which links with Oban Perth 1971 St Conan 's Church was inducted into the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such today.

History

The building was built after the plans of Walter Douglas Campbell not professionally active as an architect, brother of Archibald Campbell, 1st Baron Blythswood. The background for the construction of the church was said to be that Campbell his mother, who also financed the construction spare, everyday way to the church in Dalmally and wanted to build a nearer church. After construction in 1881 the first phase of construction was finally completed in 1886. At that time the building was rather simple and significantly smaller dimensions than is the case today, although sufficient for the small community in the sparsely populated area on the north shore of Loch Awe. Between 1907 and his death in 1914, Campbell extended the building. The work was then continued by his sister until her death in 1927. The extensions were begun in 1930 completed in order.
