St. Joseph's Cathedral, Asmara

The St. Joseph's Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale di San Giuseppe ) in Asmara was built 1916-1922 in Romanesque- Lombard style. The cathedral stands in the center of Asmara. She comes from a time when Eritrea was under Italian colonial rule (see colony of Eritrea ).

The cathedral was consecrated in 1922. Today, it is the bishop's church of the Ethiopian Catholic bishop of the Eparchy of Asmara. The Ethiopian Catholic Church is an autonomous ritual Church of the Roman Catholic Church.

The 57m high neo-Gothic tower takes on architectural elements of the Big Ben, the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster, in London. The tower can be climbed and offers remarkable views over the city center with its ensemble of buildings in the Art Deco style. On the grounds of the Cathedral, there is a primary school, a monastery and a convent school, which was built along with the Cathedral.
