Saint Stephen

St. Stephen's is a municipality in the Obersimmental -Saanen of the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

St. Stephen's is located in the Bernese Oberland in the Upper Simmental between two Simmen and the steering. The municipality extends to the Albristhorn ( 2'762 m above sea level. M. ). The neighboring communities of north clockwise are starting Zweisimmen, Diemtigen, Adelboden, Lenk and Saanen.

The municipality comprises the Bäuerten Ried, houses, Grodey, mats, Fermel, Obersteg and to Hähligen. A place called St. Stephan does not exist.

Policy

St. Stephen's is a municipality without civil community. In addition, there is a Reformed congregation. Mayor of the municipality is Albin book ( as of 1 January 2014).

The voting shares of the parties at the national elections of 2011 were: SVP 60.5 %, 12.7% EDU, BDP 9.4%, SP 4.9%, FDP 3.6%, 2.5%, glp, GPS 2.3 %, EPP 1.8%, CVP 0.7%.

Name

The name of the village goes to the St. Stephen, patron of the church of the community back. The legend says, a soldier of the Theban Legion named Stephen had lived in a canyon at the entrance to Fermeltal, today to Hähligen, hidden and there as a hermit.

Airfield

The valley floor is a 2050 m long airstrip with hard surface, ( ICAO code: LSTs ). A maintenance company takes care of the maintenance of private planes. Was built the airfield for the military, today it is used mainly civil. Among other things, by a private Hunter Club, which has a Hawker Hunter of the former 15 Squadron, which was transformed into a papyrus Hunter.

At the flying a Hunter festival has been held since 2000.
