  • Games of Cagliari Calcio (until 2012 )
  • Football World Cup 1990

The Stadio Comunale Sant'Elia is a football stadium in the Italian city of Cagliari in Sardinia. It was the home of premier sporting Cagliari Calcio and was closed in 2012.

History

The Stadio Sant'Elia was built in 1970 and opened. It solved the Stadio Amsicora as the home ground of the football club Cagliari Calcio, who had won in season 1969/70 so far his only Italian Championship, from. The Sant'Elia offered at this time up to 60,000 spectators, the attendance record dates from the autumn of 1970, when the first round of the European Champions' Cup against AS Saint- Étienne approximately 70,000 visitors attended the meeting.

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup 1990, the stadium was thoroughly renovated and modernized, the capacity fell by 39,905 to courts. At the World Cup, it hosted three matches in Group F, with the participation of the English team. As a result, the stadium was also used for athletics events.

In the summer of 2002, the Sant'Elia was again rebuilt. This was due to the decline in audience interest in the Games of Cagliari Calcio, as in previous years, usually commuted Lift team between series A and B and the large distance between spectator stands and playing field. Behind two gates and on the side of the opposite stand tubular steel stands were erected on the existing athletics track, which transformed the athletics arena into a pure football stadium. Three quarters of the then existing stadium today are thus useless, only the main stand will continue to be used. The spectator capacity declined therefore to 23,486 places.

Planned construction and closure

Since 2007 Cagliari Calcio is planning to build its own stadium. In September 2010, we presented the plans for the new building. The stadium will have a capacity of 23,600 covered seats and be completed in 2011. It is not built in Cagliari, but arise in Elmas about eight kilometers away. To date, however, neither the proposed private financing secured nor the final location is selected.

On 16 May 2012, the authorities declared the stadium due to safety concerns for a risk to public safety. The last matches of the 2012/13 season at the Stadio Nereo Rocco wore Cagliari in Trieste. For the 2012/13 season drew Cagliari Calcio, initially for three years as a temporary solution in the Stadio Is Arenas to Quartu Sant Elena, which was rebuilt for the claims of the series A.
