Stadskanaal
Stadskanaal ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Groningen. It has 32 861 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and is 120 km ².
History
The place is relatively young. On February 11, 1765 Mayor of Groningen decided to dig a canal between Ter Apel and Groningen. Because Groningen was the only real city in the northeast of the Netherlands Traditional ( " Stad en Land " ), is meant by " city " the city of Groningen. Therefore, the channel Stadskanaal was called (Channel to the city ). 1815 Kanaal was already finished by the water tower.
In 1856 the Stadskanaal was finished. Along the canal they built houses that together formed a village that was also the name Stadskanaal soon.
For many years Stadskanaal the center of the industry. First outweighed peat, and was completely excavated as the Moor, the village became the center of the potato starch industry. After the Second World War changed the industry, as Philips opened a factory for the manufacture of picture tubes. Thus, the community grew very strong. Today Stadskanaal is still a worthy focus of the environment because there are many facilities such as a hospital and many comprehensive schools. The train station is no more, but in summer there is a museum train to Veendam.
In Stadskanaal the Dutch composer Cornelis Dopper was born in 1870.
