Steese Highway

The Steese Highway is a major road in the U.S. state of Alaska, which connects to a length of 261 km Fairbanks in the Interior with Circle on the Yukon, 80 km south of the Arctic Circle. The highway was completed in 1927 and by James G. Steese, a former general of the U.S. Army and Chairman of the Alaska Road Commission, named. Original Highway was built to establish a supply route in the Circle Mining District, in which in the 1890s was the center of Alaska's gold mining to the discovery of gold on the Klondike.

The first 71 km from Fairbanks are paved, after which the road becomes a gravel road. The highway runs through the White Mountains, a mountain range of the Tanana Hills.
