The Stellenbosch University ( Afrikaans: Universiteit van Stellenbosch, English: Stellenbosch University, shortly SU) is a university in South Africa. The main campus is located in Stellenbosch, Cape Town about 50 km from the center. It is one of the few higher education institutions, where is taught mainly in Afrikaans.

History

The University's history goes back to the founding of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium on March 1, 1866 and to the establishment of the Faculty of Arts in 1881 as Stellenbosch College. 1887 the college was renamed Victoria College and with attainment of university status in 1918 finally to the present name Universiteit van Stellenbosch Stellenbosch or University. Six former South African prime minister completed his studies at the University of Stellenbosch.

Location

Stellenbosch is a town with 90,000 inhabitants (excluding students), which is strongly influenced by the university. The University is spread over four different sites, the main campus, the. Tygerberg Faculty of Medicine in Cape Town, the Bellville Park Business School in Cape Town and the Faculty of Military Sciences in Saldanha

Language of instruction

At the University of Afrikaans is mainly spoken. However, it is all students allowed to write the homework and exams in English. Only in the courses of higher semesters English is spoken. In order for the University of Stellenbosch is one of the few higher education institutions in South Africa that teach mainly in Afrikaans.

At the university there are 150 departments which are divided into ten departments. In addition, there are about 40 research institutes. Student numbers from 2005 in parentheses.

Facilities

At the University there is an extensive library of computerized data base. There is a modern conservatory with two concert halls where concerts are held regularly. In the Langenhoven Student Centre is the student council, a food court, a shopping center and the offices of around 50 different student organizations.

It offered about 30 different sports. Sports facilities include two stages, two large swimming pools, various sports courts and a motor sports center.

The dormitories can accommodate about 6,000 students.

Of 28,000 students enrolled in 2010 were 67.1 % White, 16.3% Coloureds ( 14%), 14.6% Black and 2 % Indian. 45.9 % of the students were male.
