The track width was three Swedish feet ( 891 mm). The operation was until nationalization in 1951, later renamed by the Company Stockholm Rimbo Järnvägsaktiebolag to Stockholm Roslagen Järnvägsaktiebolag led. History

The original route Stockholm- Rimbo

On August 1, 1883 started the construction. The track width of three Swedish foot was elected to the track located in Rimbo with the already under construction and in October 1884 opened railway line to connect Länna - Norrtälje, which also had a track width of three feet. The Stockholm- Rimbo was taken on December 17, 1885 in the presence of King Oscar II solemnly into operation. It was first called Stockholm- Rimbo Järnväg ( SRJ ).

Growth through acquisitions

Djursholmsbanan

In December 1890 a branch line from Ösby (now Djursholms Ösby ) was opened after Framnäsviken. This had been built by the company Djursholms AB to bind under construction Garden City Djursholm to Stockholm. Train services on the Djursholmsbahn was operated by SRJ that provided the vehicles. In August 1892 SRJ bought the track and committed itself to going to electrify and then extend over the previous railhead Stockholms Östra addition to Engelbrektsplan. The Djursholmsbahn was thus 1895, the first electrified railway in Sweden. 1901 Djursholmsbahn was extended until 1912 to Eddavägen and Svalnäs.

Rimbo - Sund Järnväg

In January 1897, started the construction of a narrow gauge line of Rimbo after Häverösund under the name Rimbo - Sund Järnväg ( RSJ ). The official inauguration took place on 17 December 1897. On this route the SRJ led the driving by and also acquired shares in the operating company. 1915, the line was extended to Hallstavik. At this time, the FRY had already acquired almost all the shares of RSJ. The formal acquisition was completed on 1 January 1935.

Södra Roslags Kustbana ( SRK )

From 1898, a 16 -kilometer branch line was built by Åkersberga from SRJ Station Roslags Nasby by the company Södra Roslags Kustbana. Due to the swampy terrain is planned for December 1899 This motorway until September 1901, the construction costs delayed tripled. As with the Djursholmsbahn the train service was operated on this route by SRJ. 1906, the line was extended by 2 miles to Österskär. The SRJ had acquired the majority stake in SRK over time and took over the company in July 1909 completely.

Uppsala Länna Järnväg ( ULJ ) and Länna - Norrtälje Järnväg ( LNJ )

Until 1905, the FRY had acquired the majority of shares in Uppsala Länna Järnvägsaktiebolag and took over on July 8, 1905 Operating on this existing since 1877 narrow gauge line.

The continuation of the ULJ that from Länna about Rimbo to Norrtälje leading Länna - Norrtälje Järnväg, was. Since 1901 in economic difficulties and was for sale On June 5, 1905 SRJ bought the LNJ and also took over on July 8, 1905 operation.

Renaming in Stockholm Roslagens Järnvägar

1908, the ULJ been fully incorporated, whereby the Rimbo station had become a node in the growing network of SRJ. Since therefore the original route network between Stockholm and Rimbo only represented about a quarter of the total network, it was decided to change the name of the company accordingly: On January 1, 1909, she was - renamed Stockholm Roslagens Järnvägar - while retaining the initials SRJ.

Route Djursholms Ösby - Näsbypark

The route from Djursholms Ösby after Näsbypark was built by the SRJ again on its own. It was electrified from the beginning. On December 31, 1901, the first section was Djursholms Ösby - Altorp opened. Then the work rested for the time being until the October 18, 1928 followed by the section Altorp - Lahäll. On May 25, 1937, the track reached its endpoint Näsbypark.

Subsidiaries

Faringe - Gimo Järnväg

In contrast to the acquired companies Faringe - Gimo was järnvägsaktiebolag ( FGJ ) from the beginning, a subsidiary of the SRJ. SRJ 1915, along with some local authorities and other interested parties applied for a concession to build a railway line between the station located at the ULJ Faringe and Gimo. In Gimo there was a large iron ( Gimo bruk ) and a connection to the narrow gauge line Dannemora - Hargshamn with several branch lines. The concession was granted on 3 December 1915. Construction began in September 1917. Partly as a result of strikes, however, delayed the construction work so that the southern section of Faringe to Tuna until January 1919 he was able to walk exclusively for freight transport in operation. On November 2, 1920, the section Tuna Alunda followed, at the same time was the release for the passenger. On October 1, 1921 was finally the total distance to go into operation.

Dannemora - Hargs Järnväg

The SRJ changed on 1 January 1926, Dannemora - Hargs Järnvägsaktiebolag ( DHJ ), operator of the route Dannemora - Hargshamn, in a subsidiary to, after they had previously acquired the majority of shares. Thus, the route network of the SRJ had reached its maximum extent.

First closure of a section

The section Eddavägen - Svalnäs the Djursholmsbahn was shut down with a length of one kilometer on 1 January 1934.

Further electrification

In addition to the already electrified in 1885 Djursholmsbahn more sections were electrified over time:

Nationalization

In 1939 the Swedish Parliament decided to nationalize the entire Swedish railway system. As part of the general railroad nationalization Stockholm Roslagen Järnvägsaktiebolag was nationalized on 1 July 1951 and incorporated on 1 July 1959, with all its former subsidiaries as operating unit 39 in the state railway company Statens Järnvägar.

DHJ conversion to standard gauge and extension to Hallstavik

Since 1874 there was already a standard gauge route from the station Örbyhus on the railway line Stockholm- Sundsvall to Dannemora, was transported to the iron ore from the local mines. On May 28, 1961 This can track was connected to the DHJ route. Previously, the route of Dannemora was to Gimo equipped with dual gauge track, so here could run both normal and narrow gauge cars already. In July 1970, the secondary route was rebuilt after Hargshamn to standard gauge.

In order to achieve the paper mill in Hallstavik after the planned closure of the narrow gauge line Rimbo - Hallstavik on the rail, a 15 km long standard gauge new line of Hargshamn was then built up Hallstavik and put into operation on 26 May 1977.

The 1992 disused iron mine Dannemora was taken on June 13, 2012 again. In order to manage the associated increased traffic both direction Örbyhus as well as the Baltic port Hargshamn, the track was upgraded and increased the maximum speed to 70 km / h.

Handover to Storstockholms Lokaltrafik

On May 1st, 1972 SJ handed over the remaining electrified lines south of Rimbo and their vehicles to Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). SL operates on these routes, regional trains under the name Roslagsbanan, the colloquial name for the former overall network. The northernmost section between Kårsta and Rimbo was completely shut down by SL in January 1981 and subsequently degraded. Since then, the former railway junction Rimbo is without any siding.

History from 1972

The story from 1972 is treated in the article Roslagsbanan.

Closures

Statens Järnvägar saw no future in the operation of the narrow gauge lines and therefore planned the closure of all non normalspuriger routes. One year after the acquisition therefore began the decommissioning of individual sections. In the following table, all closures, even before the nationalization and after submission to other companies, recorded:

Current operation

The numbers in the 1970s, converted to standard gauge track Örbyhus - Hallstavik about Dannemora, Österbybruk, Gimo and Hargshamn is performed as before freight. The future of the route is secure thanks to the Erzverkehrs from the mine Dannemora. A resumption of passenger service is not planned.

The future of passenger traffic on the electrified network between Kårsta and Stockholm Östra is secured. Individual sections are built twofold. There are considerations of Molmby Station to build a branch line to Stockholm Arlanda airport.

On the section Uppsala Östra - Faringe the former ULJ Lennakatten been carried out since 1979 in the summer months, the museum operating steam locomotives and historic diesel railcars under the name. In connection with the designation of new residential areas in Bärby, Gunsta and Funbo in the east of Uppsala, the possibility was investigated to perform at least partial portions a regular passenger with light-rail railcars. These considerations are not continued, the new residential areas should be connected to the city of Uppsala According to current plans by bus.

All other lines of the former Stockholm Roslagens Järnvägar and its subsidiaries are eliminated.

Långängsbanan

From 1915 to 1966 reversed from Stocksund a Långängsbanan called local railway to Långängstorp. This just 1.2 kilometer route with a stopover in Stockby Norevägen was originally built as a standard gauge tram line. SRJ led the operation on this route. You should be extended to the station restaurants of Djursholmslinie once. The standard gauge was chosen in order to connect them in the future with the likewise standard gauge Stockholm tram network can. Both were never realized. At the request of the SRJ Långängsbanan was rebuilt in 1934 on 891 -mm narrow gauge and connected when Stocksund station with the existing network.
