STP (motor oil company)

STP is a trademark and trade name for mineral additives and performance division of the Clorox Corporation.

It was founded in 1953 in Saint Joseph (Missouri ). The name STP is derived from " Scientifically Treated Petroleum". The first product of the company was STP Oil Treatment.

In 1961 the company was acquired by the Studebaker -Packard Corporation. Studebaker tape STP as an acronym for " Studebaker Tested Products " in its advertising. The President of Studebaker -Packard, Sherwood Egbert, however, thought the fact that STP could outdo its parent company someday and recruited Andy Granatelli as President of STP in order to make the product name known. At that time, Granatelli was a well-known racing driver, also the " face" of STP, often wearing at races a white jumpsuit with red STP Oval and gave thousands of oval STP stickers from. Granatelli had two Novi Special placed in the 1964 Indy 500 race; Jimmy Hurtubise and Bobby Unser were the drivers. There was a film about the race, which mainly dealt with the Novis.
