Subdivisions of England

The administrative divisions of England was reformed in some parts of the country for the last time in 2009. England is currently divided into nine regions, including Greater London. The eight regions outside of Greater London are divided in three different ways. Since 2009, there exist

  • 6 metropolitan counties, which are subdivided into a total of 36 Metropolitan Boroughs
  • 27 non-metropolitan counties, which are subdivided into a total of 201 Districts ( areas with two-stage administrative structure, see also List of Districts in England)
  • 56 unitary authorities ( regions with single management structure)

The boroughs, districts and unitary authorities may have different additional titles they either perform historical time or have received in recent years (eg, because of their size). A distinction Cities, Boroughs and Metropolitan Boroughs and London Boroughs.

Greater London consists of the City of London and 32 London boroughs ( districts ), of which Westminster has a special City status.
