Subligaculum

The subligaculum was a kind of loincloth in the Roman Empire.

Description

This Roman garment was made of leather and resembled the shape of a modern underpants. On one side of the subligaculum was closed with cords. It was worn by both men and women (in women parallel to the pectoral fascia ) and was an important part of the equipment of gladiators, athletes and actors. Most of these loincloth was the only piece of clothing that was worn under the tunic.

The subligaculum differed through his pant leg sewn from other loincloths that were only a cloth that was attached with a belt.

History

The subligaculum there were in the entire Roman antiquity and a preserved specimen was found in England. To visit it is at the Museum of London.
