History

Founded in 1946, it was an important force in the Sudanese politics ( and one of the two most influential communist parties in the Arab world, next to the Iraqi Communist Party ) until 1971, when military ruler Gaafar al - Nimeiry a wave of repression against the party started - after a failed coup in whose involvement some communist officers were involved. Abd al - Chaliq Mahdschub, Joseph Garang, Alschafi Ahmed Elschikh, Babkir Elnour and Hashim Elatta (the most famous party leaders ) were executed.

From 2006, the SCP was led by Muhammad Ibrahim Nugud and plays only a marginal role. However, after Nugub the party enjoys the support of a wide range of democratically minded Sudanese society, including those of " workers, peasants, students, women's groups, minorities, the Nuba mountain people, the South Sudanese and the people of Darfur. " Human rights activist Suleman Hamid El Haj is the Assistant Secretary and spokesman of the party. He advocates a return to democracy, and is against the possible secession of South Sudan. The more liberal political climate has it gives the party to be more active since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Party leader Mohammed Ibrahim Nugud came from two decades of Verstecktbleibens. Party members who suffered during the decades of the NIF regime, had asked him to act more actively, but Nugud afraid of being arrested. Nugud visited Juba, southern Sudan on 28 November 2008 for the first time in two decades at the invitation of the southern communists. The trip was " aimed " to strengthen the activities of the SCP in southern Sudan. He was received by SPLM Deputy Secretary General, Dr. Ann Itto.
