Sugar Land is a city on the Gulf Coast in the U.S. state of Texas and is part of the Houston - Sugar Land - Baytown metro area. Today, Sugar Land is the largest city and economic center of Fort Bend County.

Sugar Land is according to the magazine Money the average hottest place in Texas and the drittheißeste in the United States. Sugar Land holds the title of the fittest city in Texas for the population between 50,000-100,000.

History

Before their expulsion in the 18th century, the Karankawa and the Atakapa tribes lived in the present territory of Sugar Land. Sugarland was founded in the early 19th century sugar plantation.

Nathaniel Williams, whose brother Samuel was one of the first settlers in the area, bought the land in 1838. Together they put on several plantations, on which, among other cotton, corn and sugar cane were grown. 1853 bought Benjamin Terry and William J. Kyle plantations and called the settlement Sugar Land.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 63 328 people in Sugar Land, 20,515 households, and 17,519 families. The population density was 1,015 inhabitants per km ². 56.00 % of the population were White, 5.20% African American, 0.24 % Native American, 33.80 % Asian and 0.03 % Pacific Islander, 2.32% were of another race and 2.41 % a mixture of more than two colors the skin. 7.98 % of the population are Hispanic.
