Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa

The Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa ( SCA) is the highest Court of Appeal of South Africa in terms of civil and criminal law. It has constitutional powers, but does not replace the Constitutional Court of South Africa ( Constitutional Court ), the Court is binding on the SCA.

The court which has its headquarters in Bloemfontein, has 22 judges, one of which, depending on the location of a case of three or five judges come together to meetings. President of the Court since the August 15, 2008 Lex Mpati.

History

The Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa found its beginnings with the establishment of the Appellate Division in 1910, when the Union of South Africa was formed by the four British colony Cape, Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal. With the adoption of a new constitution in May 1996, the Appellate Division was renamed the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa and incorporated into the new constitution.
