Importance for the Kenyan Running

While Kenyan runners won since 1968 at major international events such as the Olympics and World Championships Medals regularly in the medium and long- haul routes, runners from Kenya were unable to provide comparable results. In the Kenyan society sporting ambitions of women for a long time were not supported. Sirma was in 1991 in Tokyo, the first Kenyan woman in history, who won a medal at the world championships. Together with runners like Sally Barsosio and Tegla Loroupe, who won at the World Championships in 1993 and 1995 bronze medals in the 10,000 m, she laid the groundwork for the rise of Kenyan women in the world top of the middle and long distance running.
