Susuman
Sussuman (Russian Сусуман, translit. Susuman ) is a small town in the Magadan Oblast ( Russia) ( October 14, 2010 status ) with 5855 inhabitants.
Geography
The city is located in Kolymagebiet, about 650 km north of the Oblasthauptstadt Magadan, below the mouth of Sussuman in the Bjorjoljoch ( Bereljoch ), a left tributary of the left Kolyma river source Ajan - Jurjach.
The city is the administrative center of the Sussuman Rajons same name.
History
The name is from the Evenki kuchuman name - Snowstorm - derived here for the opening into the Bjorjoljoch Creek.
Sussuman was created in 1936 as a small settlement, which was expanded starting in 1938 with the beginning of large-scale gold mining. At the origin recalls the emblem of the city, depicting a stylized gold digger.
In the entire area soon countless prison camp emerged in Gulag system. From 1949 to 1956 was in Sussuman managing one of the largest Soviet camp, the Saplag ( Sapadny trudowo - isprawitelny storage / Western labor and improvement warehouse of Dalstroy, the Bauhauptverwaltung of the Far North ), in which at times up to 16,600 people were imprisoned. 1964 was the site of a town.
With the economic crisis of the 1990s, the population declined dramatically.

Economy and infrastructure
Sussuman is one of the centers of gold mining in Kolymagebiet. There are also companies in the construction and food industries.
The city lies on the " highway of federal importance " Kolyma Yakutsk - Magadan ( 1187 km from Yakutsk ) and has an airport.
