Susumu Hani
Susumu Hani (Japanese羽 仁 进, Hani Susumu, born October 10, 1928 in the prefecture of Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter.
The director was born in 1928 as son of the left historian Hani Gorō and his wife. After finishing school in 1947 he began to work for the News Kyodo News as a journalist. Hani's early career began with documentaries, including Kyōshitsu no kodomotachi (1954) and Te o kaku kodomotachi (1956). This made the Cinéma vérité documentary style known in Japan and were therefore in the interest of other Japanese filmmakers.
In the 1960s he became one of the most important representatives of the so-called " Japanese Nouvelle Vague ". He mostly sat a layman actors and mixed stylistic device of documentary and the feature film. In his first feature film The probation of 1961 he was disaffected young people in a youth prison. Hani began actual youth offenders as an actor to let the movie seem more authentic. For this film, the director received the Kinema Jumpo Award as "best director" and for " Best Film ".
There were other movies like A Meaningful Life (1962) and She and He (1963 ), which were shown in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and the director brought in recognition as well as in Europe. One of Hani's most famous films is The Girl Nanami from the year 1968. In this drama, whose screenplay Hani co-authored with Shuji Terayama, the title character is a working in the red light district youth who falls in love with the young Shun, who at the first meeting with her traumatic childhood experiences processed.
After his film The stranger in the rain forest, Hani beginning of the 1980s, withdrew from the feature film. He turns since then for television wildlife documentaries in Africa.
From 1959 until the divorce in 1977, Hani was married to actress Sachiko Hidari, who in 1963 starred in you and He confided. From the relationship, born 1964 daughter Mio Hani emerged that should make himself a name as an essayist and director.
