Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan is a small Adriatic island near Budva in Montenegro and due to its municipal area. A short causeway connects the small island whose area covers only 1.46 hectares, with the mainland. On the mainland opposite the island since the 1950s, growing the same village with apartment buildings, some hotels and restaurants up the hill. The population of 411 (as of 2003) is divided into 256 Serbs, 109 Montenegrins, Croats 6 and 40 other.

Sveti Stefan is especially known for the picturesque fishing village of the same name with houses dating from the 15th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, the whole little village was converted into a hotel island with about 250 beds. The streets, roofs and facades of houses have retained their original character. A casino was part of the system, which gave the name Sveti Stefan Adriatic Monaco. Several members of high society, among them Sophia Loren, Sylvester Stallone and Claudia Schiffer, were already a guest in Sveti Stefan. Even political variables, such as Willy Brandt, Helmut Kohl and Silvio Berlusconi were among the guests. 1992 played here the former world chess champion Bobby Fischer after 20 years of abstinence, a match against Boris Spassky, who was himself world champion from 1969 until 1972 he was defeated by fishermen. The competition can therefore be considered as a kind of revenge, the Fischer won again.

The island was leased by the company Amanresorts for 30 years from state of Montenegro in 2007 and then renovated. In summer 2010, a gradual reopening began as Aman Sveti Stefan. After completion of the work to 53 suites are available, some of it in a villa on land.
