Svidník

Svidník ( German Oberswidnik ) is a city in eastern Slovakia. It is the administrative seat of the homonymous district and center of the Ruthenian population in Slovakia.

The municipality was created in 1944 by the merger of the municipalities Nižný Svidník (Hungarian Alsószvidnik or Alsóvízköz since 1907 ) and Vysny Svidník ( German rarely Oberswidnik, Hungarian Felsöszvidnik or Felsövízköz since 1907 ).

Geography

Svidník in the broad valley of the upper Ondava is by mountain ridges of the mountain Ondauer country ( Ondavská Highlands ) surrounded the foothills of the Low Beskids. The Duklapass - 502 m above sea level, the lowest Carpathian pass at all - is about 20 kilometers from Svidník in a northeasterly direction away.
