Svobodny, Amur Oblast

Svobodny (Russian Свободный ) is a town in Amur Oblast (Russia) with 58 778 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northeast of the Russian Far East Amur to its tributary Seja, about 170 km upstream of the estuary and the Oblasthauptstadt Blagoveshchensk.

The city is the Svobodny Oblast administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

Svobodny is located on the opened on this section 1916 Trans -Siberian Railway.

History

Svobodny originated around 1910 in connection with the construction of the bridge near the Amurbahn, an alternative route to the original route of the Trans-Siberian Railway through Manchuria, on the Zeya. Since 1901 there were already near the village Suraschowka resettlers. 1912 received the right place city under the name Alexejewsk, after the then heir to the throne of the Russian Empire, Alexei Romanov. In April 1917, after the overthrow of the Tsar during the February Revolution, the city government named the place in Svobodny (of Russian свобода / swoboda for freedom ) what was confirmed by the Russian Provisional Government in July 1917. In the 1930s Svobodny has been as a base for the planned construction of the Baikal- Amur Mainline to the "capital" of BAMLag, one of the largest prison camp in the Gulag system.

In Svobodny there is a local history museum and a Geological Museum.

Economy

Svobodny 's transportation hub with two railway stations ( Svobodny, 7807 route km from Moscow and Michailo - Tschesnokowskaja, km 7812 ) and car repair work on the Trans -Siberian railway and river port on the Zeya. There are also machinery, light, furniture and food industries. The city is the administrative center for geological exploration and mining exploitation of the region (eg Goldfördeung by Amursoloto ).

About 20 km north-west of the city is the same rocket launch site. In the vicinity there are more objects of the Russian armed forces.
