Åšwibie

Świbie ( German Schwieben ) is an Upper Silesian village in the municipality Wielowieś, Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. It has 1300 inhabitants and is located on the western edge of the Upper Silesian industrial area near the border with the Opole Voivodeship. Świbie is a typical street village in north-south orientation. The village consists of two parts, the lower village and upper village. Świbie has a distinctive mayor's office and forms Dąbrówka a church.

Geography

Świbie is located on the Upper Silesian Muschelkalk back about eight kilometers from the municipal seat Wielowieś ( Langendorf ) and around 33 km from the county seat Gliwice ( Gleiwitz ) away. Neighboring towns are Radonia ( Radun ) Wiśnicze ( Wischnitz ) and Dąbrówka ( Dombrowka ). To Świbie the hamlet Diana ( Diane Berg) and Napłatki include ( Naplatken ).

North of the village is the sky witzer forest reserve with the " Hubert".

History

Schwieben was first mentioned in 1299. Schwieben and the road on which the site is located, were probably created by Cistercians from heaven joke. Schwieben was under German law.

In 1619 Schwieben became Protestant and Catholic again in 1665. In the division of the toaster goods 1666 Schwieben came along with Wischnitz to Georg Leonhard Graf Collona. 1669 Chapel in Oberndorf was built. The Second World War and its consequences 120 inhabitants perished. 1945 Schwieben was occupied by the Red Army and the German town previously came under Polish administration later. Another 140 residents left Schwieben or had to leave the place. The official name was changed to Schwieben Świbie.

In 1964, the new elementary school was built in Świbie.

From 1950 to 1998 Świbie lay in the province Katowice. In 1999, Schwieben the Silesian Voivodeship and in the revived powiat Gliwice.

About the site Schwieben and Schwiebener the book "Wild is wormwood. The Chronicle of internees Russia 1945 " by Joseph Ploch. Świbie was from 1961 to 1992 for excavation finds from the Lusatian culture. Świbie was 2006 and 2007 filming location for the documentary " Liberator - the last flight " ( Polish " Ostatni lot bestii " ) of docu frame, which is about the launch of a Consolidated B -24 on July 7, 1944.

Etymology of the name

The place name Schwieben and its Polish part form Świbie derived probably from the (probably Slavonic ) name of a plant. An old German spelling of the place was Schwiben and an old Polish name was Świbia. The Latin name of the place is Schwiebensis.
