Analysis

The sentences pervades a common theme, the fate motif.

About the program of the first set Tchaikovsky wrote: " Introduction. Complete submission to fate or what is the same, in the inscrutable decree of Providence. - Allegro: . Murmurs, doubts, complaints, reproaches "The sentence begins with a thoughtful melody of the clarinet, which is the fate motif of the symphony. The melody leads into the more energetic, initiated by flutes and clarinets and adopted by the strings main theme of the movement. The second main theme of the movement is intoned with occasional interference of the leitmotif of the woodwinds.

The second movement, in connection with which Tchaikovsky asked if he "throw the faith in the arms " itself should begin with a deep introduction of the strings, before a horn solo to the cantabile, designated by Tchaikovsky as a " ray of light " main theme of the movement raises and finally is supported by the clarinet and oboe. From the thundering onset fate motif, the main theme of this second set is only interrupted briefly.

The third movement is written in the style of a quiet waltz. He, too, can be disturbed by fate motif only briefly.

Like the first movement begins, the fourth sentence with the fate motif, but this time certain, especially in major, occurs. After a detailed introduction to the finale of this goes to a formal outbreak of the orchestra, the this, occasionally accompanied by fate motif continues until the end of the finale.

Effect

During the premiere still moderately turned out, the critic Josef Sittard was the Symphony for one of the " most important musical phenomena of our time." Tchaikovsky described his fifth symphony as " misslungenes works" ( mainly because of the finale ), and appreciated even the previous 4th Symphony higher. Today, however, the fifth part, together with the fourth and sixth symphony Tchaikovsky to its most popular symphonies.
