Syrian presidential election, 2007

A referendum on the adoption of the presidential candidates Bashar al- Assad in Syria was held on 27 May 2007 after the People's Council had voted to propose the incumbent on 10 May 2007 for a second term.

According to the Syrian Constitution of 1973, the Arab Socialist Baath Party was the leader of the state and society, and therefore the president had to be a party member. The National Progressive Front, a led by the Baath Party political coalition that nominated a candidate in Parliament, the People's Council. The candidate must be adopted by at least two thirds of the members, so the next step is held a referendum in which a candidate must obtain at least 51% of the vote.

Result

According to the Interior Minister Bassam Abdel Majeed Assad won with 97.62 percent of the vote. The election was boycotted by the opposition in exile and called manipulated and "farce".
