Tahmasp II.

Tahmasp II (Persian طهماسب [ tæhmɔ ː sb]; * 1704, † 1740 in Sabzevar ) was the son of Shah Sultan Hosein ( 1694-1722 ) and was crowned on November 16, 1729 the penultimate ruler of the Safavid dynasty. In October 1722 Afghan Gilzai conquered under Mir Mahmud Hotaki the capital Isfahan and forced Tahmasps father to abdicate. Tahmasp had already fled in June 1722 from the city of Qazvin direction and tried to organize resistance. He appointed in November 1722 as the new ruler. From Qazvin he went in December 1722 after Azerbaijan and from there to Māzandarān to gather an army and to negotiate with the Russians, who took advantage of the instability of the Safawidenreiches for their expansion. At the same time the Ottomans were in the West marched across the border and occupied cities such as Hamadan and Kermanshah.

Tahmasp managed the two mighty Turkish tribes of Afshar and Qajar to get it over with. Together with his military slaves ( Ghulam ) and later General Nadir Khan Afshar Tahmasp could push back the Afghans. In the meantime ( 1725) Mir Mahmud Hotaki had been replaced by his cousin, Ashraf Khan. This lost two battles at Isfahan and Shiraz in and fled to Kandahar, but was killed on the road. Tahmasp returned end of 1729 back to Isfahan and the Safavids had the kingdom again under their control. Nadir Khan could push back the Ottomans and the Russians, a peace treaty was concluded. As Tahmasp on your own later against the Ottomans moved and lost, Nadir Khan use this, sat in August 1732 Tahmasp and brought his 8 months old son Abbas on the throne ( Abbas III. ). On March 8, 1736, however, Nadir Shah crowned himself to ( Nadir Shah ) and thus became the first ruler of the dynasty Afschariden. Had the Safavids from 1722 only in name exists, its time from 1736 was finally over. Tahmasp II and his son Abbas III. were executed in 1740.
