Suleiman II of Persia

Sulaiman II (Persian سلیمان, DMG Sulaimān, † 1750), actually I Sayyid Muhammad ( مير سيد محمد, Mīr Sayyid Muhammad Sayyed Mohammad or Mīr ), was a maternal grandson Safi II (r. 1666-1694 ) - had ruled from 1668 Sulaiman I. - and in 1750 for a few months the penultimate shah from the Safavid dynasty. This ruled Persia since 1501, but since then they had been overthrown in 1722 by the Pashtun Ghilzai (see Hotaki dynasty ), was the real power in the hands of various Generals and other potentates, who used the Safavid only as a puppet ruler. So the Afscharide Nadir Shah in 1732 Abbas had initially III. installed as ruler before 1736 again dropped him to himself to become king. When, after Nadir Shah's death ( 1747 ), among others, present-day Afghanistan fell to Ahmad Shah Durrani and southern Persia to the Zand - Prince, put the latter in 1750 the Safavid Ismail III. to the throne.

In Khorasan, where still ruled the Afschariden, a grandson of Nadir Shah named Shah Ruch came to power shortly before. This had the Safawidenspross Sulaiman, an influential cleric of the holy city of Qom, Mashhad brought to his capital and entrusted him with the administration of the waqf goods for the local grave of the eighth Imam Ali Riza. In this way, the Afscharide wanted ( like his grandfather) retain a potential and therefore not dangerous candidate for the throne in the eye, but the infighting in his court developed quickly in another direction: Some nobles and viziers who were dissatisfied with Shah Ruch, persuaded Sulaiman that he alone was the rightful ruler of Iran. Thus goaded crashed Sulaiman end of 1749 reluctantly Shah Ruch, let him imprisoned and blinded later. On January 13, 1750, he was appointed Sulaiman Shah II and issued for the next three years a tax amnesty, which the Treasury heavily loaded. In addition, there were problems with Ahmad Shah Durrani in the East, who did not acknowledge the supremacy Sulaiman and Herat conquered. Sulaiman's position was by no means certain. To make matters worse, that now at the General Yusuf Ali Khan Dschalayir ( Yūsuf ʿ Alī Han Ǧalāyir ) a group of conspirators gathered that in order to get to the state wealth, overthrow Sulaiman and the blind Shah Ruch wanted to bring to the throne. So Sulaiman II was on the night of Nouruzfest 1750 killed by the conspirators, Shah Ruch freed and re-appointed ruler. The supporters of Sulaiman fled either or came to terms with the new old rulers.
