The Tanintharyi Division (until 1989 Tenasserim, Malay tanassari ) is one of the 14 administrative units (division ) in Myanmar ( Burma).

Location and colonization

Tanintharyi forms an elongated forested coastal land in the southeast of the Irrawaddy valley from Lower Burma and is located in the Andaman Sea. To the east, the Tenasserim mountain range rises to 1,600 meters, which forms a natural border with Thailand.

The Tanintharyi Division occupies an area of ​​43,346 km ². With a population of 1,537,000 (January 2005) gives a population density of 35 inhabitants per km ².

The population is made up of members of the ethnic groups of the Bamar, Karen, Mon, Rakhine, Shan and salon.

The largest city is Myeik ( Mergui) with 173 317 inhabitants, followed by capital Tavoy ( 137,000 ). Myeik and Kawthoung (formerly Victoria Point ), located at the southern tip of Tanintharyi Division opposite the Thai town of Ranong, are the starting point for the tourism in the islands of the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea.

History

Throughout history the coastal region most listened to Burma, but was also part of the Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai ( under Ramkhamhaeng ) and Ayutthaya. King Ramathibodi I. allowed the Portuguese in the early 16th century, a trading post in Tenasserim. It was only in 1759 Tenasserim was recovered by King Alaungpaya for Burma.

1826 had to cede to the British the Burmese Tenasserim in the Treaty of Yandabu; the division was incorporated into the Indobritische Empire.
