Taras Shelestyuk

Taras Olexandrowytsch Schelestjuk (Ukrainian Тарас Олександрович Шелестюк; born 30 November 1985) is a Ukrainian boxer in the welterweight division. Schelestjuk was bronze medalist of the 2010 European Championships, 2011 World Champion and bronze medalist of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Career

For the first time on the international stage to Schelestjuk showed at the World Student Games 2006 in Almaty, where he in the light welterweight ( -64 kg ), however, failed in the first fight. Only two years later, he started for the first time at the Ukrainian Championships welterweight ( -69 kg ), but did not progress beyond the quarter-finals.

Things went better but then in 2009 when he could be the first time Ukrainian Champion, a title he could repeat in 2010 and 2011, and as such took part in the 2009 World Championships, where he claimed victories over Leon Chartoy, Sweden ( 10:3 ), and Onder Sipal, Turkey ( 14:6 ), in the second round in the late bronze medalist Serik Säpijew, Kazakhstan ( 16:11) failed.

2010 Schelestjuk won his first international medal when he at the European Championships after beating Andrei Samkowoi, Russia ( 6:2 ), Onder Sipal, Turkey ( 4:2 ), and John Joe Joyce, Ireland ( 9:1), and won a semi-final defeat against Bacskai Balazs, Hungary (4-2 ), the bronze medal.

His biggest success came Schelestjuk at the 2011 World Championships when he with wins over Torben Keller, Denmark ( 23:8 ), Carlos Banteur, Cuba ( 17:15), Alexis Vastine, France ( 18:11 ), Andrei Samkowoi, Russia ( 13:13 ), in the semi-final against Vikas Krishan, India ( 15:12 ), and in the final against Serik Säpijew, Kazakhstan (16:10), became world champion.

As reigning world champion, he was qualified for the 2012 Olympics, in which he reached after victories in the last sixteen Vasile Belous, Moldova ( 15:7 ), and in the quarterfinals over Alexis Vastine, France ( 18:18 ), the semi-finals. In this he surprisingly lost against the local hero Fred Evans ( 11:10 ) and thus had to deal with the Olympic bronze medal satisfied.
