Tarrafal camp

The Campo do Tarrafal (also known as " Campo da morte lenta - camp of slow death " ) was a concentration camp at the same place Tarrafal on Santiago Island of Cape Verde.

It was built in the former Portuguese colony in the Estado Novo of the dictator Salazar in 1942 and served on the detention of anti-fascist opposition. A total of 32 anarchists, communists and other political opponents died in this camp. It was closed in 1954 but reopened in 1961 to imprison African leaders of the struggle against colonialism there.
