Tatpurusa

Tatpurusha ( तत्पुरुष tatpuruṣa ) is a term derived from the Sanskrit grammar, which denotes a particular type of compounds. In linguistic terminology, a tatpurusha is a endozentrisches Determinativkompositum. Here, the final link is qualified by the antecedent. In a narrower sense among the Tatpurushas only those composites in which a Kasusbeziehung between the two components is. The front section can represent each of the six oblique cases of Sanskrit. Standing front and hind limbs in the same case, one speaks of a Karmadharaya - compound.

The term " tatpurusha " is also an example of this type of compound words, meaning " the man ". Other examples are:

As can be seen in the examples, Tatpurushas let Germans often, though not always, also represented by a composite, as well as the German determinative knows. However, these are not used to the same extent as in Sanskrit.

A special case of tatpurusha - compound word is the Upapada - tatpurusha ( उपपदतत्पुरुष upapada - tatpuruṣa ), in which the hind limb consists of a verbal root and the meaning of a participle has (eg सर्वज्ञ sarva - jna: " omniscient " = "all knowing " ). The Upapada - tatpurusha has no direct equivalent in English, but probably in Latin ( luci - fer: " bringing the light, light bringer " ) and ancient Greek ( αἰγίοχος AIGI - ocho " the Aigis holding ").

In rare cases ( mostly for proper names or fixed expressions ) is the leading member of a compound word tatpurusha - not as usual in the ordinary form, but in an inflected case form (eg युधिष्ठिर Yudhi - sthira " steadfast in the fight ").
