Tears of Steel
Tears of Steel is a science fiction short film with a large proportion of the CGI, which was created as part of the film project mango. This project was produced by the Blender Foundation and is used for development and testing of free software, particularly 3D graphics software Blender. The film was released Attribution license on 26 September 2012, on the project website and on Youtube under the free Creative Commons.
The film is set in the distant future near the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. A group of fighters and scientists trying to save the world from destructive robots.
The scenes in the film are almost entirely computer generated. The actors were inserted using chroma keying and rotoscoping in the environment and modified by means of tracking. The main technical objective of mango was the integration and testing of camera and motion tracking, and photorealistic rendering. Furthermore, compositing, dealing with masks ( masking) and color correction (grading) were expanded and improved.
