Ted Belytschko

Ted Belytschko ( born January 13, 1943) is an American engineer scientist. He is Professor of Computational Mechanics at Northwestern University.

Belytschko studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1965 and a PhD in Mechanics 1968. Afterwards, he was Assistant Professor, Associate Professor from 1973 and from 1976 professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is since 1977 Professor for Structural ( Structural Mechanics ) at Northwestern University, from 1991 when Walter P. Murphy Professor of Numerical Mechanics.

He developed grid-free numerical methods in solid mechanics and advanced finite element methods specifically designed for the modeling of crack propagation. He also modeled nanotubes and fracture behavior with molecular mechanics.

In 2001 he received the Timoshenko Medal, 1999, the Von Karman Medal and 2011 the William Prager Medal. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. He holds an honorary doctorate in Liege and the Ecole Normale in Paris.

Belytschko is editor of the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering.
