Sporting career

He won the title in the triple jump at the Junior European Championships 2007 in Narbonne and at the Junior World Championships 2008 in Bydgoszcz. Since 2009 he also started in the adult area. After he was still failed at the European Indoor Championships in Turin in qualifying, he won at the World Championships in Berlin in the final eleventh place.

The international breakthrough came at the World Indoor Championships in Doha in 2010. He won there the gold medal and set with 17,90 m, setting a new world record. Outdoors he improved his personal best at the adidas Grand Prix in New York City at 17.98 m. At this time, this was the sixth- longest jump in history. Only Jonathan Edwards and Kenny Harrison had ever jumped on. In the aftermath of a calf injury Tamgho could not retrieve its full performance potential and had to settle for third place at the European Championships 2010 in Barcelona. He then moved his coach and has since been managed by former Cuban long jump Olympic champion Iván Pedroso.

In February 2011 Tamgho improved at the French Indoor Championships his own world record by one centimeter to 17.91 m. Two weeks he succeeded in his victory at the European Indoor Championships in Paris again, as he jumped to 17.92 m twice. In addition, he won there in fourth place in the long jump. After victories at the Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix in Doha and the Athlétissima in Lausanne, he had his outdoor season but stop short when he injured himself at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava while warming up. It was found a fracture of the ankle, which he also had to cancel his start at the world championships in Daegu. Another surgery prevented the qualification and participation in the Olympic Games of 2012.

On March 30, 2013, was 20 months from injury in Bron with 16.76 m his comeback. At the World Championships in Moscow, he reached on 18 August 2013, the last attempt of 18,04 m Weltjahresbestweite and so won the gold medal.
