History

In 1971, the first studies have been made, which examined the development of the city and the traffic in the next 20 years. From a report was created in 1974, which recommended, among others the construction of a metro with seven lines, which should be supplemented by buses and taxis. The law on the establishment of the Tehran subway and railway company, which led to the founding of the operating company, was adopted in 1975. The following year began geological investigations, land surveys and Studies of buildings. Due to the overthrow of the Iranian government, the future of Iraqi -Iranian war and financial problems were resting work on the subway in the 1980s. In 1995, the works on lines 1, 2 and 5 were awarded. Took place on March 7, 1999 with the commissioning of the line 5, the opening of the Tehran Metro. Sections of the line 2 followed on 21 February 2000, and also a part of the Line 1 was put into operation on 28 August 2001.

Line network

Line 1

Line 1 runs in a north -south direction from the stop Tajrish in the north to the southern terminus Kahrizak. You currently includes 29 stops. With the completion of the final stop Tajrish the length of the total distance about 28 kilometers. Interchanges to the other lines there at the bus stops Darvazeh e Dowlat (line 4) and Imam Khomeini (line 2). Between the northern terminus and the stop Shoush the distance of 14 km in runs underground, where 480 m gap to be overcome. The southern part of the track runs above ground and largely parallel to the state railway route Tehran - Mashhad. The trains consist of seven cars ( train length 137 meters ), the electric motor of a power rail (750 volts DC ) is supplied. The maximum speed of the trains is 80 kilometers per hour.

Line 2

Line 2 has 21 stops over a total length of over 20 kilometers, most of which are underground. From the eastern terminus Tehran Pars she runs to the west and then change to line 1 on the station Imam Khomeini. From there, the route continues to the western terminus Tehran ( Sadeghieh ) with connection to the line 5 It is the same type of train with seven cars will be used as the line 1.

Line 4

Line 5 ( Tehran - Karaj - Mehrshahr Rapid Transit )

The line 5 is actually an electrified suburban railway (maximum speed 140 km per hour), but which is integrated into the metro network in the city. This is evident, since no subway railcars but double-decker commuter trains are used on this line other than on the other two lines. They consist of a railcar at the ends and eight passenger carriages in between ( total length 248 meters). The system was designed for up to ten intermediate cars per train. The railcars are driven by medium voltage of 25 kilovolts and 50 Hertz. The total length of the line is to the stop Golschahr the west 41 km. It ends in the east at the stop Tehran ( Sadeghieh ), which is the western terminus of Line 2 at the same time. Overall, the line currently includes twelve stops, which are approached in a ten- minute intervals.

Future expansion

Extensions of the existing network

Departing from the original plan of the 1970s, an extension to the north was built. This is due to rapid population growth of the city. Metro experts urged then to this extension of the network to reflect this. The line currently ends at the stop Tajrish Square. Takes on the construction by the Chinese consortium CITIC, the procurement was done in November 2002. Moreover, an extension in a southerly direction to the Imam Khomeini airport and, where appropriate, discussed with a compound according to Vavan.

For line 2 is an extension to the east is provided with branches in the suburbs Damavand and Pardis.
