Teniposide (trade name: Vumon ®, Manufacturer: BristolMyersSquibb ) is a glycoside of podophyllotoxin. Because of its cell growth inhibitory effect, it is used as a cytostatic agent in the treatment of tumors. Teniposide made semi- synthetically from the root of the evergreen American Maiapfels ( Podophyllum peltatum ).
Teniposide is a topoisomerase inhibitor. To inhibit topoisomerase II, and thus hinders the DNA replication in the cell during S- phase (and G2 - phase) of the cell cycle.
