Tesfaye Dinka

Tesfaye Dinka was from April 27 to June 6, 1991 Prime Minister of Ethiopia.

Tesfaye Dinka belongs to the people of the Oromo. Nevertheless, he was a leading member of the Mengistu regime and a member of the Political Bureau of the Workers' Party of Ethiopia ( WPE ). Prior to his appointment as head of government Dinka had already gained experience in various ministerial posts. Successively he was agricultural, financial and industrial ministers. In the period from 1989 to 1991, Foreign Minister of his home country. At the same time he held since September 10, 1987 from the office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Tesfaye Dinka belonged to the moderate people of the Mengistu regime and to the camp of those members of the government, which recommended Mengistu negotiations with the insurgents. In the last days of the regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam, he was appointed head of government. Just under a month later, he had to give up his office to the new rulers after the flight of Mengistu and the conquest of the capital Addis Ababa.

Dinka worked in the 1990s for the World Bank and UN organizations. He has been living in the U.S. and is now Senior Adviser to the Global Coalition for Africa. This is committed to the economic development of Africa.
